Masatake was a famous horticulturalist who authored an enlarged edition of his father’s 1699 book about plants in 1710. Masatake’s twenty volume book was entitled Zōho Jikinshō (Enlarged Book of Earthly Brocades). This gallery shows the forty-two pages of pictures included in volumes 12. Click on a picture to enlarge it. It is difficult to identify all the plants that Masatake chose as subjects because he drew their shapes inaccurately and colored them only in shades of gray. In addition, many of the plant names given by Masatake are no longer used.
